Overview

Cold rolled all thread is produced by rolling steel bar through dies to form continuous threads, a process that increases its surface hardness and tensile strength. This method results in a smooth finish and precise thread dimensions. The low-carbon steel composition provides a balance of strength and ductility, making it suitable for a wide range of general-purpose fastening, anchoring, and support applications where high-strength alloy steel is not required.

Available with a zinc plated finish for moderate corrosion resistance or a standard oil finish for rust prevention during storage, all thread rod offers flexibility for different environments. It is commonly used in construction for anchoring systems, in manufacturing for jigs and fixtures, and in plumbing and electrical work for hanging pipes and conduit. The continuous threading allows for versatile adjustments and secure connections using standard nuts and washers.

Working with Cold Rolled All Thread

Machining

Easily cut to length with an abrasive chop saw or band saw. Thread ends should be chased or filed to remove burrs for smooth nut engagement. Can be drilled for cross-pinning.

Welding

Weldable using common methods like MIG or Stick, but welding can damage the threads and will compromise the zinc coating. Pre-heating is generally not required for this low-carbon steel. Mechanical fastening is the intended use.

Finishing

Supplied with either a zinc plating for corrosion resistance or a light oil finish. The zinc finish provides moderate protection. The oil finish can be easily removed for painting or other coatings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between cold rolled and hot rolled all thread?

A: Cold rolled all thread is formed from cold-finished bar, resulting in a smoother surface, tighter tolerances, and increased tensile strength (typically around 63,800 PSI for 1018 steel). Hot rolled is less common and has a rougher finish.

Q: Can I use zinc plated all thread outdoors?

A: Zinc plating offers good protection against moisture in indoor or mild outdoor environments. For long-term outdoor exposure, especially in marine or corrosive settings, stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized all thread is recommended.

Q: How do I cut all thread rod without damaging the threads?

A: The best method is to thread two nuts onto the rod, make your cut between them with an abrasive saw, and then unthread the nuts. The second nut will help clean and reform the threads at the cut end.
