Overview

Type 304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel, also known as 18-8 for its nominal composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This composition provides excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric and corrosive environments. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but its strength can be increased through cold working. Its combination of properties makes it a versatile choice.

As a sheet product, 304 stainless steel offers exceptional formability, making it suitable for deep drawing and bending operations. It is available in several finishes, including the standard dull 2-B mill finish and the popular #4 brushed finish for aesthetic applications. Its excellent weldability by all common fusion techniques allows for complex fabrications, from kitchen sinks to architectural panels, without requiring pre- or post-heating for most sections.

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM A240: Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and for General Applications

Common Applications

  • Food & Beverage: Countertops, sinks, and processing equipment - for its hygienic, non-reactive surface.
  • Architecture: Wall panels, column covers, decorative trim, and roofing - for its clean appearance and weather resistance.
  • Automotive: Exhaust components, trim, and wheel covers - for heat and corrosion resistance.
  • Medical: Surgical instruments, medical carts, and sterilization trays - due to its sterilizability and corrosion resistance.
  • Kitchenware: Cookware, flatware, and appliances - for durability and food-safe properties.
  • Chemical Processing: Storage tanks, piping, and vessels - for its resistance to a wide range of chemicals.
  • HVAC: Ductwork, furnace parts, and filter frames - for its durability and resistance to moisture.

Working with Type 304 Sheets

Machining

Type 304 has fair machinability. Its tendency to work-harden requires the use of sharp tooling, slow speeds, and heavy, continuous feeds to prevent glazing. Chip breakers are recommended as the chips can be stringy and tough.

Welding

Excellent weldability with all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals. AWS E/ER308 or 308L filler rods are commonly used. For maximum corrosion resistance, a post-weld anneal is recommended to redissolve any chromium carbide precipitation.

Finishing

304 stainless steel can be mechanically polished to a variety of finishes, including the common #4 brushed finish and a highly reflective #8 mirror finish. It is also suitable for chemical coloring and passivation to enhance corrosion resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between 304 and 304L stainless steel?

A: 304L has a lower carbon content (0.03% max vs 0.08% max for 304) to minimize carbide precipitation during welding. This improves corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone of the weld, making 304L a better choice for heavy-gauge welded components.

Q: Is 304 stainless steel magnetic?

A: In its annealed, austenitic state, 304 is non-magnetic. However, it can become slightly magnetic after cold working processes like bending, forming, or drawing due to the formation of martensite in the microstructure.

Q: When should I use 316 instead of 304 stainless steel sheet?

A: Use 316 stainless steel for applications with significant exposure to chlorides (such as salt water, de-icing salts) or more aggressive chemical environments. The added molybdenum in 316 provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to 304.
