Overview
3003 aluminum is a commercially pure aluminum alloy with manganese added as its primary alloying element. This non-heat-treatable alloy offers about 20% more strength than the 1100 series while retaining excellent workability and high corrosion resistance. It is one of the most widely used aluminum alloys for general-purpose applications that do not require high mechanical strength but demand good formability and a clean finish. Its properties make it a reliable choice for fabricated components.
The H14 temper indicates that the plate is strain-hardened and partially annealed to a half-hard condition. This process enhances its strength compared to the annealed (O) temper, while still allowing for significant forming operations like bending and drawing. This balanced state makes 3003-H14 plate ideal for manufacturing parts that require moderate strength after fabrication, such as HVAC ductwork, chemical storage tanks, and various sheet metal components used in industrial and architectural settings.

Applicable Standards
- ASTM B209: Standard Specification for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Sheet and Plate
Common Applications
- HVAC: Ductwork, fan blades, and louvers - for its excellent formability and corrosion resistance.
- Chemical Equipment: Storage tanks, piping, and containers - due to high resistance to chemical corrosion.
- Food & Beverage: Cooking utensils, kitchen equipment, and packaging - for its non-toxic and corrosion-resistant surface.
- Automotive: Radiator parts, fuel tanks, and trim - valued for its workability and lightweight properties.
- General Fabrication: Stamped parts, spun hollowware, and general sheet metal work - because it is easily formed and welded.
- Architecture: Siding, roofing, gutters, and decorative panels - chosen for its lightweight and atmospheric corrosion resistance.
Working with 3003 Aluminum Plates
Machining
3003 aluminum has fair machinability. Being a softer alloy, it can be slightly gummy. For best results, use sharp tooling, high cutting speeds, and ample lubrication to prevent chip buildup.
Welding
This alloy has excellent weldability and can be readily welded using all common techniques, including TIG and MIG. 4043 filler rod is a common choice that provides good results for most applications.
Finishing
3003 aluminum plate responds well to various finishing methods. It can be anodized for increased corrosion resistance and color options, painted, or powder-coated. It can also be polished to a bright, reflective finish for decorative applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between 3003 and 6061 aluminum plate?
A: 3003 is a non-heat-treatable alloy known for superior formability and corrosion resistance with a tensile strength of 22,000 PSI. 6061 is a heat-treatable structural alloy with much higher strength (45,000 PSI) but is less formable.
Q: Is 3003 aluminum plate good for welding?
A: Yes, 3003 aluminum exhibits excellent weldability and is one of the easiest aluminum alloys to weld using common methods like TIG and MIG. Use of a 4043 filler rod is typically recommended.
Q: What does the H14 temper mean for 3003 aluminum?
A: The H14 temper signifies that the material has been strain-hardened to a half-hard temper. This provides a good balance between the increased strength from work-hardening and the ductility needed for forming operations.
