Overview
Galvanized pipe is carbon steel pipe that has been hot-dipped in a protective zinc coating. This process creates a durable, sacrificial barrier that prevents rust and corrosion, significantly extending the pipe's service life, especially in outdoor or high-moisture environments. The zinc layer provides both physical protection and cathodic protection, making it a reliable and low-maintenance choice for long-term structural and fluid transport applications.
Based on the ASTM A53 Grade B standard, this pipe offers a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 PSI and excellent weldability. It is commonly used where strength and weather resistance are critical. The uniform wall thickness of Schedule 40 pipe ensures consistent pressure ratings and structural integrity, making it suitable for water lines, fence posts, scaffolding, and protective barriers.

Applicable Standards
- ASTM A53: Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless.
Common Applications
- Outdoor Construction: Handrails, guardrails, and safety barriers due to superior weather resistance.
- Plumbing & Waterworks: Supply lines for non-potable water, drainage, and irrigation systems.
- Fencing: Framework, posts, and top rails for chain-link and other metal fences.
- Agriculture: Pen construction, gates, and irrigation structures that withstand environmental exposure.
- Structural: Scaffolding, support columns, and framework for canopies and small structures.
- Electrical: Conduit for protecting outdoor electrical wiring from damage and moisture.
Working with Galvanized Pipes
Machining
Galvanized pipe can be machined, but the zinc coating can be abrasive to cutting tools. Slower speeds are recommended. The coating must be removed from areas that require precise tolerances.
Welding
Welding galvanized steel requires caution. The zinc coating releases hazardous fumes when heated and must be ground away from the weld zone before starting. Proper ventilation and respiratory protection are essential. The base steel has excellent weldability once the coating is removed.
Finishing
The galvanized finish is the primary surface treatment. It can be painted, but requires a specific primer designed to adhere to zinc surfaces for a durable bond.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 galvanized pipe?
A: Schedule 80 has a thicker wall than Schedule 40 for the same nominal size. This gives it higher strength and pressure ratings, but a smaller internal diameter. Schedule 40 is more common for general structural and low-pressure fluid applications.
Q: Can galvanized pipe be used for drinking water lines?
A: It is generally not recommended for potable (drinking) water. Modern plumbing codes often require copper, PEX, or CPVC due to concerns about zinc and trace elements from the galvanizing process impacting water quality over time.
Q: Can you thread galvanized pipe?
A: Yes, galvanized pipe is designed to be threaded using standard NPT (National Pipe Taper) dies. The threading process removes the zinc coating, so it is recommended to apply a cold galvanizing compound or protective paint to the exposed threads to prevent rust.
