Overview
Type 304 is the most versatile and widely used austenitic stainless steel, known for its chromium-nickel composition that provides robust corrosion resistance in various environments. This grade is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Its excellent formability and weldability make it suitable for complex shapes and assemblies, forming the backbone of countless industrial and consumer products.
As round tubing, Type 304 offers a superior combination of strength, aesthetics, and hygiene. Its smooth surface is easy to clean, making it a primary choice for food processing and medical equipment. The material’s strength-to-weight ratio is advantageous for structural framework, supports, and railings where both durability and appearance are critical. It can be easily polished to a high luster or brushed for a satin finish.

Applicable Standards
- ASTM A269: Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Tubing for General Service
Common Applications
- Architectural & Decorative: Handrails, guardrails, and balustrades - for its clean appearance and corrosion resistance.
- Food & Beverage: Sanitary tubing for processing lines and equipment - due to its non-reactive and easy-to-clean surface.
- Marine Environments: Boat railings and hardware - for its good resistance to atmospheric corrosion.
- Automotive: Exhaust systems and decorative trim - for its heat resistance and polished finish.
- Medical: Instrument trays and structural components for hospital equipment - due to its sterilizable surface.
- General Fabrication: Frames, supports, and decorative structures - for its excellent weldability and formability.
- Restaurant & Kitchen: Equipment legs, handles, and framework - for its durability and hygienic properties.
Working with Type 304 Round Tubes
Machining
304 stainless steel has fair machinability but is prone to work hardening. Use sharp tooling, low speeds, and heavy, constant feeds to prevent glazing. The use of a chip breaker is recommended as the chips can be stringy.
Welding
This grade exhibits excellent weldability by all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals. Post-weld annealing is not typically required to restore corrosion resistance, making it ideal for field fabrication.
Finishing
304 tubing can be finished in multiple ways. A standard mill finish is common, but it can be polished to a mirror-like #8 finish or given a brushed/satin finish (e.g., 180 grit) for decorative applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between 304 stainless tube and pipe?
A: Tube is measured by its exact Outside Diameter (OD) and wall thickness, used for structural and decorative applications. Pipe is measured by a nominal inside diameter (NPS) and schedule, used for fluid and gas transport.
Q: Can 304 stainless steel rust?
A: While highly resistant to corrosion, 304 can rust in highly corrosive environments, particularly those with high chloride content like coastal areas or exposure to certain chemicals. For marine applications, 316 grade is often a better choice.
Q: Is 304 stainless steel magnetic?
A: In its annealed, austenitic state, 304 stainless is non-magnetic. However, it can become slightly magnetic after cold working (e.g., forming or machining).
