Overview

6063 aluminum is an alloy primarily containing magnesium and silicon, often called "architectural aluminum." It exhibits moderate strength—lower than the more common 6061—but possesses superior characteristics for finishing, extrudability, and corrosion resistance. Its fine grain structure allows for an exceptionally smooth surface finish, making it the preferred choice for applications where aesthetics are critical. The T5 temper indicates the material has been artificially aged after cooling from the extrusion process.

As a seamless extruded pipe, this product offers uniform strength and dimensional consistency, making it suitable for fluid conveyance, structural components, and framework. The standardized Schedule 40 wall thickness provides a good balance of strength, weight, and internal capacity for a wide range of general-purpose applications. Its inherent resistance to atmospheric corrosion makes it a durable, low-maintenance material for both indoor and outdoor projects, especially when anodized or powder-coated.

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM B241: Standard Specification for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Seamless Pipe and Seamless Extruded Tube.

Common Applications

  • Architectural & Construction: Handrails, guardrails, and stair railings due to smooth finish and corrosion resistance.
  • Store Fixtures & Displays: Retail clothing racks, shelving supports, and trade show booth frames.
  • Furniture: Frames for outdoor patio furniture, table legs, and decorative elements.
  • Marine: Boat railings, ladders, and canopy frames where saltwater resistance is needed.
  • Fluid Handling: Irrigation systems and low-pressure air or water lines.
  • Automotive: Custom trim, roof racks, and decorative roll cages.
  • Signage: Frames for indoor and outdoor signs and structural posts.

Working with 6063 Aluminum Pipe

Machining

6063 aluminum machines well, producing a good surface finish. It is softer than 6061 and can be slightly "gummy." Use sharp tooling, high speeds, and a proper lubricant or coolant to prevent material buildup on the cutting tool.

Welding

This alloy has excellent weldability using TIG or MIG methods. 4043 filler wire is commonly recommended for its good flow characteristics. The heat-affected zone will lose some of its T5 temper strength, which should be considered in structural designs.

Finishing

6063 is the premier choice for anodizing, accepting a wide range of clear, color, and hardcoat finishes with uniform results. It can also be easily polished to a high luster or powder-coated for color and added durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between 6063 and 6061 aluminum pipe?

A: 6061 pipe has significantly higher strength (approx. 45,000 PSI tensile) for structural use, while 6063 has moderate strength (27,000 PSI) but a much better surface finish and is superior for anodizing, making it ideal for architectural and aesthetic applications.

Q: Can I use 6063 aluminum pipe for an outdoor handrail?

A: Absolutely. 6063 aluminum's excellent natural resistance to atmospheric corrosion makes it a primary choice for outdoor applications like handrails, fences, and frames. Anodizing is recommended for maximum durability and color retention.

Q: What's the difference between aluminum pipe and tube?

A: Pipe is identified by a nominal inside diameter (NPS) and a schedule (wall thickness) and is intended for fluid conveyance. Tube is defined by a precise outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness and is typically used in structural, mechanical, and aesthetic applications.
